Detection of Hidden and Exposed Nodes in Wireless Networks.

A method of identifying hidden nodes in a wireless network (101) comprises identifying nodes residing in a wireless subnetwork (121) of a user node and identifying nodes residing in a Medium Access Control (MAC) subnetwork of the user node. Nodes (112) present in the wireless subnetwork but not the MAC subnetwork are designated as hidden nodes. Hidden nodes may also be identified by searching for nodes contactable only via a multi-hop route. Exposed nodes may be identified by establishing that if the medium is in use, and the node being transmitted to is hidden from the user node, transmission from the user node may still be possible.
