The invention relates to load-carrying apparatus, for example pallets, rotationally moulded from a plastics material filled with a mineral filler. Methods and apparatus for manufacturing the load-carrying apparatus are also described. In one embodiment, the load-carrying apparatus comprises a pallet formed in two halves as two pallet elements. The plastic, rotationally moulded pallet elements form a nested configuration when stacked in the same orientation, but interlock to form a double-sided pallet when one of the pallet elements is inverted (see Fig). The pallet is preferably moulded with two spaced feet along one side so that a single foot on the other interleaves when they are inverted to form a double pallet. The feet may be tapered and recesses with deformable teeth may be provided to lock the pallets together (Figs 20 or 24). The load surface can be plane or apertured. A plurality of pallet elements can be rotationally moulded together (Fig 21). The mould material can be at least 10% high density polyethylene filled, preferably with a mineral filler such as sand although other such as salt or even organic materials are mentioned. A unifier such as a stereate or fatty acid amide may be provided. The pallet may be single sided, can have bracing (914, Fig 9) or be formed of outer layers (1010, Fig 10) with an inner foamed coating (1010). Also disclosed is an apparatus for rotationally moulding ISO containers with inserted twistlocks using a double walled mould (Fig 1 and 7) as is a manufacturing plant with machines for loading material on telescopic arms (Figs 11-13). |
