The ring (30) comprises alternating elastic and non-elastic sections connected by an air tube for expanding and deflating the elastic sections. Releasing air from the tube via a valve causes the ring to be tightened around the rim (10). A ring-shaped spacer part for securing to a wheel rim beneath a tire (20) can adopt a fixed position extending around the entire rim and pressing the two tire feet (22) against the insides of the two rim flanges (12) on either side of the rim base (14). The spacer ring can also adopt a released position in which it can be screwed onto and unscrewed from the rim. The spacer ring comprises alternating elastic sections and non-elastic sections in the lateral direction. An air tube connects the elastic sections to the non-elastic sections internally and the elastic sections can be expanded by blowing air into the tube and made to contract by a flow of air in the opposite direction. Releasing air from the tube via a valve causes the ring to be tightened around the rim. An independent claimS is also included for a method for fitting the ring by screwing the inflated ring onto the rim and then deflating it when it is correctly positioned.
