The method involves sealing predetermined cylinders (Z1, Z3) of an internal combustion engine having multiple cylinders (Z0-Z3). The cylinders (Z1, Z3) are not actuated such that torque provided by the engine before and after the non-actuation of the cylinders (Z1, Z3) remains unchanged. Inlet and exhaust valves are closed when the cylinders (Z0-Z3) are deactivated to confine fresh or combustion gas in a combustion chamber.
