A conductive organic material (1) is formulated and used in layers to sandwich an insulating layer (3), forming a composite (2). Shells are made by thermoforming the composite. Objects are made from the shells (4). Terminals (5, 6) are fitted, for connection of an electrical feed to the conductive layers. Power is supplied at a suitable voltage and current. Measurement terminals (7, 8) are fitted to the conductive layers. The resistance and capacitance of the multilayer are measured, and from these, state information is generated. An explicit claim is made for the manufacture of objects formed as shells in layered composite materials as described, in which an organic material is formulated. An independent claim is included for the object so formed.
