PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating a continuous type heating furnace by which the heat loss caused by exhaust gas is reduced to reduce the unit consumption of fuel. SOLUTION: In the method for operating the continuous type heating furnace, in which for achieving the above target, a pre-heating zone, heating zone and soaking zone, are disposed from the furnace end side, and an exhaust gas flue is formed at the furnace end side edge part, this method for operating this heating furnace has the following characteristic, that is, the pre-heating zone has the exhaust gas flue side range as the range at forming side of the exhaust gas flue and a reverse-exhaust gas flue side range as the range of the reverse side, and in the exhaust gas flue side range, a plurality of burner sets are provided in the furnace longitudinal direction and the plurality of burner sets are used in order from the reverse side to the furnace end side according to the combustion loading amount.
