Surface seal (1) consists of a layered construction made up of a bearing base layer and at least one covering layer (6,7) above it. The covering layer is divided into two layers and at least the lower layer is fitted with an indicator made of bitumen or of colored grit. The indicator shows damage to the upper layer. The seal can have a layer of asphalt, with a base asphalt layer (3), an asphalt binding layer (4) and a two covering layers, or alternatively a concrete layer laid on the base layer with two covering layers, or a combination of concrete and asphalt.
