PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure functionality and safety of a device, without damaging a facility by emergency stopping, by surely stopping while avoiding its sudden stopping when a riding car abnormally nose-dives. SOLUTION: This emergency stopper of a rope guide type elevator has a hydraulic cylinder 22 with a spring for pushing one in the other of a pair of brake members arranged on the riding car 10 side by sandwiching emergency stopping ropes 4a and 4b by arranging the emergency stopping ropes 4a and 4b in parallel to guide ropes 3a and 3b. The emergency stopper is provided with brakes 20a and 20b for stopping the riding car 10 by nipping the emergency stopping ropes 4a and 4b, and a control part 30 having an acceleration detector 31 for operating the brakes 20a and 20b by detecting abnormal nose diving of the riding car 10; and is constituted so as to safely stop this riding car in the abnormal nose diving of the riding car 10 by cutting of lifting ropes 2a and 2b.
