<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide technology capable of automatically deciding the vertical direction of an image. <P>SOLUTION: First, by analyzing a pixel value of the color image, prescribed image characteristic information showing a characteristic of the color image is acquired. The vertical direction of the color image is decided by use of a decision rule using the image characteristic information.
