<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize an automatic dispersion compensator for accurately compensating the dispersion with a simple constitution. <P>SOLUTION: The transmit side gives delays to a first and second wavelengths lights modulated with a modulating frequency fm and a duplexer 14 duplexes them to output to an optical fiber 15. The receive side has a variable dispersion compensator 16 for compensating the dispersion of the light passed over the optical fiber 15, a demultiplexer 17 demultiplexes the light passed through the compensator 16, an optical/electric converter 18 converts it to an electric signal, and a spectrum intensity measuring unit 19 measures the spectrum intensity of the electric signal at the modulating film fm. A controller 20 obtains the dispersion compensating quantity corresponding to the measured spectrum intensity (RF power) to control the dispersion value of the compensator 16 according to the obtained dispersion compensating quantity.
