<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and its apparatus for preventing or repairing a hole defect in course of welding, in a lap joint of metallic materials such as copper and an aluminum alloy that are difficult to perform laser spot welding. <P>SOLUTION: In a laser head 2, there is installed a sensor 5 for constantly detecting intensity of heat-radiating light from a melting section 6. When the light intensity indicated by the detection signal of the sensor 5 is a prescribed value or below, with the condition continuing for a prescribed time, a computer 10 discriminates the occurrence of a hole defect, sending a command signal to a laser generator 1, increasing the peak output of a pulsed laser emitted from the laser head 2, and filling the hole defect in the upper plate 19 with a fused material from the lower plate 18.
