PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a ballast water treatment method and apparatus which are excellent in reliability and safety. SOLUTION: The ballast water treatment apparatus has a treatment chamber 3 for storing and treating the ballast water and a water impact generator 15 for generating the water impact in the ballast water in the treatment chamber 3. The water impact generator 15 is equipped with: a gas converging detonation wave generation section 35 which converges the detonation waves generated by the combustion of a fuel and generates the converging detonation waves of an ultra-high pressure; a high-speed flying object 37 which flies at high speed by the pressure of the converging detonation waves generated by the gas converging detonation wave generation section 35 and generates underwater shock waves by colliding against the treatment water surface within the treatment chamber; and an acceleration chamber 39 in which the high-speed flying object 37 flies under acceleration. The treatment chamber 3 is equipped with: an enlarged diameter section 3a communicatively connected to the acceleration chamber 39; a converging section 3b connected to the enlarged diameter section 3a and reduced in the diameter; and a treatment section 34c connected to the converging section 3b.
