The invention relates to methods for treating tissue injury and/or afflictions, by administering a prophylactically or therapeutically effective amount of particulate, bioavailable beta(1-3;1-6) glucan. The invention also relates to methods in which beta(1-3;1-6) glucan is provided in the form of whole glucan particles, microparticulate beta-glucan particles or a combination thereof. The invention also relates to method of enhancing glucan-mediated committed stem cell proliferation and expansion after injury via the complement system.
