An operating process for a fuel cell (1) comprises using at least one auxiliary low voltage source (6), that is fed from the cell in normal operation, to operate the high voltage secondary unit (3) in stopping and starting operations by means of a control circuit (4). An independent claim is also included for a fuel cell operated as above.
