PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved dental composition for whitening teeth, and to provide a method for using the same. SOLUTION: This composition producing chlorine dioxide in an amount effective to clearly change the whiteness of the surfaces of teeth is used. The composition comprises the first component having a chlorine dioxide precursor and the second component having a sour agent capable of contacting with the precursor to produce the chlorine dioxide. When the first component and the second component are mixed with each other to produce the chlorine dioxide, the composition has pH within the range of about 3.0 to about 4.5. In order to whiten the teeth, the first component and the second component are mixed with each other, and the consequently obtained mixture can be applied to the teeth. Or, one of the first component and the second component can first be applied to the teeth, and thereafter the other is applied.
