The system has a detector fixed to the vehicle for use authorization communications with a portable enabling device, an electronic ignition lock (5) with a holder (4) and an infrared transmitter (5.2) and receiver (5.1) for conducting the communications when the enabling device is inserted into the holder in key mode and a mechanical starting element (6) for keyless-go mode. The infrared transmitter and receiver for detecting the portable enabling device or the mechanical starting element inserted into the holder can be operated as a reference light barrier. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a mechanical starting element (B) and an activation method for a driving authorization system.
