PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To highly accurately perform focusing while narrowing an area to be subjected to contrast focusing. SOLUTION: A focusing device capable of both passive autofocusing and contrast focusing includes: a means which, among the results of the of corresponding focusing areas obtained by the passive autofocusing, extracts a focusing area (right middle area) where a focusing result within a specific value 1 is obtained from the result of the shortest focusing; a means which, among the focusing area (right middle area) extracted and the nearest area (middle area), extracts the highest contrast focusing area (right middle area) detected by the passive autofocusing; and a means for exerting control so that the focusing area (right middle area) is subjected to the contrast focusing.
