PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an opening and closing type personal digital assistant which can be switched to a plurality of modes with a handy or simple operation. SOLUTION: In the opening and closing type personal digital assistant 10, the mode can be switched, a cabinet 31 and a cabinet 32 face each other on mutually parallel surfaces and an opening and closing coupling part 33 which is almost vertical to the surface and connect the cabinet 31 and the cabinet 32 so that they can be opened and closed is installed. The assistant is also provided with an opening/closing direction detecting means 26 for detecting an opening/closing direction when the cabinets are opened/closed and opening/closing of the cabinets and a control means 17. The control means 17 detects the mode just before the cabinets are closed when the cabinets are closed, responds to output of the opening/closing direction detecting means 26 and switches the mode to that corresponding to the mode just before the cabinet is closed and the opening/closing direction.
