The adherence of the electron-emitting coating on a core made by working sintered metallic powders so as to produce a wire having a fibre structure is increased by first distorting the core by torsion so that cracks are left between the fibres ; the final angle of the fibres may be 15‹70‹, preferably 30‹50‹, to the wire axis. The core material may be tungsten or molybdenum and the emissive materials are alkaline earths to which have been added metals of the 4th and 5th Periodic Groups. During torsion the wire may be heated to 200‹250‹C. A cathode suitable for discharge lamps may be made by winding the coated wire in a single or double coil, care being taken to see that the coiling torsion is not counter to the original torsion. |
