A tool (50) or other object is brought into the path of light issuing from laser diode and lens (14). A CCD linear array (20, Fig 2) detects the image produced by the tool (50). The image is processed by processor (22) and one or more images W,w are used to determine tool characteristics. By comparing two or more images, tool diameter, run-out, position and cleanliness can be determined. The laser diode may be pulsed to provide images at slightly more than or slightly less than one revolution of the tool, to give a slow moving tool effect. |
