The method for the control of the mixture enrichment of a lean running internal combustion engine entails carrying out the enrichment for the cooling of the exhaust gas flow in dependence upon at least one predetermined effectiveness criterium of the exhaust gas catalyser and/or of the nitrogen monoxide storage catalyser. Upon achieving at least one of the predetermined effectiveness criteria for the exhaust gas catalyser and/or the nitrogen monoxide storage catalyser the enrichment apportioned to these is no longer taken into account during the enrichment of the mixture for feeding to the engine.
