PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an excellent water absorbent having biodegradability, high safety, practicable absorption performances (water absorption capacity and water holding ratio), and a suitable gel strength, to provide a method for producing the same, and to provide an article containing the water absorbent. SOLUTION: The water absorbent comprises galactomannan and carrageenan at least partially crosslinked with borate ions, divalent metallic ions, and at least trivalent metallic ions and has a water absorption capacity of at least 30 times its own weight as measured in a 0.9 mass% aqueous sodium chloride solution and a water holding ratio of 80% or higher (this ratio is determined by dividing the water holding capacity as measured in the aqueous solution by the water absorption capacity).
