PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an abnormal ejection detecting method for detecting abnormal ejection from an ink-jet head. SOLUTION: According to the method, based on a picked-up image of a liquid material ejected from nozzles of the ink-jet head, characteristic quantities of a location or a liquid width of the liquid material are calculated at least two locations in an ejecting direction of each nozzle. If the nozzle undergoes abnormal ejection, the characteristic quantities are significantly different from each other. Thus detection of the abnormal ejection of the nozzles can be easily and positively carried out. Further a light source may be arranged on one side of the ejected liquid material opposite to a camera so as to face the camera and so as not to allow direct light projected from the light source to fall on a finder of the camera, so that the camera may catch light projected from the light source and refracted by the liquid material ejected from the nozzle, and may pick up the image of the liquid material ejected from the nozzle.
