PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coater which does not allow wrinkles to occur in drying and hardening, by smoothing the film thickness of a coating solution applied to the edge surface of an optical lens; and a method for producing an optical lens. SOLUTION: A coating solution 63 is dropped by a coating solution dropping means 52 onto a surface to be coated 2a of a spectacle lens 2L placed on a turntable 51. The coating solution 63 is spread all over the surface to be coated 2a and the edge surface 2b by centrifugal force generated by the rotation of the turntable 51. The coating solution 63 having applied to the edge surface 2b is smoothed by a solution-smoothing mechanism 54 for the lens periphery. The mechanism 54 consists of an air cylinder 90, a pantograph mechanism 91, and a coating solution removal member 92 composed of a foam (sponge). COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
