<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mail receiver capable of informing a user about the reception of mail without disturbing program viewing by the user. <P>SOLUTION: A CPU 5 discriminates whether or not a state of video display by the reception of a broadcast wave is interrupted, and uses an OSD function to display a character message (e.g., "you have received E mail" or the like) used for notice of the arrival of the E mail on a screen by using a time when the interruption of the state of video display is discriminated for a trigger.
