<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an authentication method using a challenge and a response calculated using a cycle redundant code function. <P>SOLUTION: When connecting a device to a host, the device receives a challenge from the host, and a device response generator calculates an authentication response using seed values and the challenge. An authentication process is performed by receiving a challenge and retrieving stored seed values.
