A water-based pigment dispersion comprises a pigment, dye and water. The pigment is dispersed into the dye. Independent claims are also included for: (A) a printing ink composition comprising the water-based pigment dispersion; (B) a method for preparing a water-based pigment dispersion comprising dispersing a pigment into a dye and water; and (C) a method for preparing a printing ink composition comprising adding the water-based pigment dispersion to a conventional printing ink formulation.
