PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lamp lighting device which controls overshoot of output current in an AC lighting system, generating low loss of electrodes and low noise. SOLUTION: The lamp lighting device comprises a power converter circuit 1 which converts input power into DC voltage and controls output current, a polarity inverter circuit 2 which converts the DC voltage outputted from the power converter circuit 1 into AC voltage, a detection resistance R3 which detects output current from the power converter circuit 1, a detected voltage adjusting circuit 6 which bridges across the detection resistance R3 and adjusts a primary voltage detected by the detection resistance R3, and a current controlling circuit 7 which compares a secondary detected voltage Vs, adjusted the primary detected voltage, to a standard voltage Vr and controls the power converter circuit 1 so that it follows the standard voltage Vr. The detected voltage adjusting circuit 6 makes the secondary detected voltage Vs lager than the standard voltage during set periods before and after the polarity of the lamp voltage changes.
