PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve image resolution by making the pixel size of an image sensor for performing signal detection based on a pulse modulation method to be small. SOLUTION: A pulse converting part 4 is provided, which consists of a comparator for determining whether or not a signal read from pixel cells 10 reaches reference potential for each column with respect to respective pixel cells 10 arrayed in two-dimensional way and converting the signal into a binary signal, and of a reset signal generating part, etc., which resets a photodiode in accordance with the record. A row selection scanner 3 sequentially selects a row, a pulse converting part 4 converts an electric signal by the pixel cells 10 in a column direction for each row and reads the binary signal, and when the electric signal drops below the level of the reference potential, the photodiode potential of the pixel cells is reset. A time sequential binary signal in each pixel cell is acquired by performing row scan at a high speed, and a data processing circuit 100 finds a luminance signal corresponding to pulse width with a binary signal column as a PWM signal.
