PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an encoder of revolution number data detection type which can reduce cost and consumption current by reducing the number of expensive magnetic detection elements. SOLUTION: The encoder body for measuring the displacement of a matter being measured has a revolution detector for counting (n) (n is an integer not including 0) revolutions, and a displacement quantity detector for measuring the displacement of the matter being measured. The encoder also has a magnetic detector 3 detecting magnetic variation of a magnetic rotor 1 in the revolution detector and an optical detector 4 detecting the slit of a code disc 2 in the constitution.
