PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the cleaning performance of residual toner in an image forming apparatus of a type which transfers and fixes molten toner on an intermediate transfer body on a recording material. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus of the type transferring toner images, formed on an image carrier 1 on the elastic intermediate transfer body 2 and heating and melting the toner images on the intermediate transfer body 2 to transfer and fix them on the recording material 3, comprises: a cleaning device 4, arranged opposite to the intermediate transfer body 2 and for cleaning the residual toner on the intermediate transfer body 2 by a cleaning member 5; a strain-applying means 6, arranged on the upstream side of the cleaning member 5 and for applying strain to the intermediate transfer body 2, after transferring and fixing and the residual toner on the intermediate transfer body 2; and a cooling means 7 for cooling the intermediate transfer body 2 and the residual toner on the intermediate transfer body 2 at a part applying strain by the strain-applying means 6.
