PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form tumble and/or swirl in a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine even when lift amount of an intake valve is comparatively small. SOLUTION: This intake system for the internal combustion engine is provided with at least one intake port 11 opened in the combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine, a movable valve mechanism part for operating the intake valve 3 opening and closing the intake port, an auxiliary flow passage forming means 38 for forming an auxiliary flow passage 21 extending in parallel with the intake port in the intake port, and an intake adjusting valve 31 provided on the upstream side of the auxiliary flow passage to let air flow in the auxiliary flow passage formed by the auxiliary flow passage forming means. The auxiliary flow passage is formed on a lower side of cross sectional face on the cross sectional face of at least one whole intake port. When lift amount of the intake valve raised by the movable valve mechanism part is smaller than a predetermined value, air is made to flow in only the auxiliary flow passage by the intake adjusting valve.
