A container having a circumferential wall A closed at the lower end by a bottom wall A1 and having an internal circumferential groove A2 has a metal foil closure B with a disc-like part B1 and a tubular flange B2 which is deformed at B3 to engage the groove A2 and the edge portion B4 of which is bent over the upper edge of wall A. Mechanism for capping such containers has a head with two axially relatively movable parts K, K1 between which lies a rubber ring L. Member K is rigidly mounted on a stem M slidable within a bore in member K1 while the latter has pivoted at M1 to its upper end levers M2 with projections M3 engaging shoulders M4 on stem M and fingers M5 limiting pivotal movement of levers M1 under the action of springs N between pins N1 on the levers. An operating member P with bell-like lower end P1 extending around the levers M1 slides on stem M and engages an outer rubber member Q. In operation the head K, K1 is engaged with the closure B and pressure is applied to member P to force it downwards whereon the member Q folds the portion B4 over wall A and a thrust pad P2 then engages levers M2 to draw member K upwards relatively to member K1 to compress ring L axially and cause it to expand radially and stretch part of the flange B2 into close engagement with groove A2.
