The device has an operating mechanism (1) to send stop/start signal to a control unit (3) that starts/stops an automatic drive of a vehicle based on the signal. A position sensor of an additional control unit (4) detects canopy position to recognize pulling/pressing of the canopy by a passerby. The unit (4) sends a stop signal to the unit (3) when the sensor recognizes pulling/pressing of the canopy. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling an automatic drive of a canopy system of a vehicle.
