At least one screw (15a) used to secure the casing (17) to the engine (19) is located in the feed channel (21) or a section thereof used to supply hydraulic fluid to the cylinder space (18). The tensioning device includes a hydraulic part (30b) screwed to the engine and has a casing which defines the cylinder space used to locate a piston actuated by a spring (preferably a compression spring) and a hydraulic fluid. The piston is guided directly or indirectly inside the casing and cooperates with a tension bar which can be pivoted or moved in a linear direction and is supported by a drive member. The casing contains a feed bore (20) and a feed channel for the hydraulic fluid which form a connection between the cylinder space and a fluid bore (22) in the engine. An independent claim is also included for a hydraulic tensioning device characterised by preferably two screws inside the cylinder space securing the casing to the engine and by the feed bore extending in a radial direction relative to this space in order to form a direct connection between this space and the fluid bore in the engine.
