The system includes a device that requires user authentication for its use. An institution (2) remote from a device (1) is associated with the use of the device. When an event occurs that suggests that the device is in the possession of an unauthorized party, a message (10) addressed to the institution (2) is produced by the device. The event may be the exceeding of a maximum number of attempts at user authentication.
