<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an over-the-wire catheter of a short guide wire lumen type which increases propulsion and follow-up properties. <P>SOLUTION: The over-the-wire balloon dilation catheter 20 of a short guide wire lumen type has a stainless steel hypotube catheter shaft part 22, a distal plastic shaft part 30 which is fitted to this hypotube, and a balloon 26 which is connected to this distal plastic shaft part 30. The relatively short guide wire lumen extends throughout the length of the balloon 26. The distal shaft part 30 has a reinforcing and kink-resistant transition member which extends throughout the length of this distal shaft part 30. This transition member allows the proximal guide wire lumen aperture to be placed distally from the distal end of the hypotube.
