Producing porous catalyst pellets comprising rhenium on a support comprises preparing a mixture comprising the support and a pore-forming material (I), forming pellets from the mixture and simultaneously or subsequently removing (I) by heat treatment. The rhenium is predeposited on the support and/or added to the mixture and/or deposited on the pellets after heat treatment. Independent claims are also included for: (1) porous catalyst pellets produced as above; (2) metathesis of olefinic or acetylenic compounds by contact with porous catalyst pellets as above at 50-500[deg]C.
