A steel vacuum-carbonization process uses aliphatic hydrocarbons as a carbon donor in a carbonization chamber discharging via a gas filter with an active catalytic material. The filter retains soot and converts hydrocarbons to solid carbon, hydrogen and methane. The catalytic process takes place at 550-800[deg]C and a pressure of 1-2000 mbar. The catalyst is e.g. Ni, Pt, Co, Cr or their oxides. The filter substrate is e.g. SiO2, SiC, Al2O3 and TiO2.
