Purification of (meth)acrylic acid (I) involves working up a composition (A) containing (I), water, (I) dimer, protoanemonin, maleic acid and maleic anhydride by (a) passing (A) into a dimer cracker and cracking (I) dimer at 50-300[deg]C; (b) removing the top product (B) and sump product (C) from this cracker; and (c) separating (I) from (B), preferably giving a separated product (D) based on (I). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) plant for operating this process; (2) (I) obtained by this process, in the form of fibers, moldings, films, foams, superabsorbent polymers or hygiene articles.
