Method for cleaning the ballast of railway tracks

The track maintenance machine, for cleaning the ballast at the rails (4) of a railway permanent way, takes the ballast (6) through a sieve station (8) to separate spoil (13) together with washing from a water supply. The soiled water is clarified to form a clarified sludge (18) to be carried off by a conveyor (14) with the spoil for disposal. The cleaned ballast is returned to the railway track.
