The present invention provides an aqueous coating composition for coating the inner surface of a can obtainable by subjecting an acrylic-modified polyester resin (C) obtainable by graft polymerizing a polyester resin having ethylenic double bonds (A) that has a number average molecular weight of 2,000 to 100,000 and a hydroxyl value of 10 to 120 mgKOH/g with a polymerizable unsaturated vinyl monomer (B) that includes a carboxyl-containing polymerizable unsaturated monomer to neutralization and dispersion in an aqueous medium, wherein the aqueous coating composition contains 1 to 40 parts by weight of resole phenol resin cross-linking agent (D) based on 100 parts by weight of the acrylic-modified polyester resin (C); and a method for coating the inner surface of a can using this aqueous coating composition.
