A carton for packaging articles includes a gener- ally rectangular top wall (12) having a pair of spaced hand apertures (26, 27) formed therein. The hand aper- tures are disposed to define therebetween a handle strip (100) for use in lifting the carton. The top wall (12) is provided with a fold line (102, 105, 108, 111) ex- tending from the region of each corner of the top wall (12) toward the handle strip (100) and further with a first severance line (91, 92, 93, 94) extending transversely of each fold line (102, 105, 108, 111). Each first severance line (91, 92, 93, 94) is interposed between the handle strip (100) and the respective fold line (102, 105, 108, 111) such that each fold line terminates at the respec- tive severance line (91, 92, 93, 94). This arrangement prevents stress concentration at the region of the handle strip ( 100) when the carton is lifted.
