A resin rope (5) provided with bodies (7) which are to be detected and have information detectable by means of a sensor (8) and a position sensor for detecting, using the resin rope (5), the position of a car (4) elevating/lowering in an elevator shaft (1) are disclosed. Positional information on a plurality of bodies (7) provided on the resin rope (5) suspending the car (4) is read out by means of one sensor (8) so provided in the elevator shaft (1) as to face the resin rope (5) with a small gap, thus detecting the position of the car (4).
