An ink jet head cleaning unit capable of cleaning those areas of a nozzle plate other than the areas near a nozzle port and an ink jet printer using the cleaning unit. The ink jet printer is characterized by comprising the ink jet head cleaning unit for removing foreign matters on the nozzle plate and cleaning the nozzle plate by bringing a cleaning material into contact with the entire surface of the nozzle plate in addition to a cleaning unit for cleaning the nozzle plate of an ink jet head by the contact of a conventional cleaning blade therewith.
