A mobile telephone unit that performs an alarm function by preferably using reception of a broadcast, such as a radio broadcast, assuming a case in which the reception level of the broadcast signals of a pre-selected broadcast station is low. When a set time has come, a mobile telephone unit (101), which has been adapted to receive a broadcast as an alarm, starts to receive a broadcast from a pre-selected broadcast station (104). If the reception sensitivity of the broadcast from the broadcast station (104) is week, the mobile telephone unit (101) utilizes GPS or the like to acquire the information of its own position, and then compares the acquired information with information of area-based broadcast stations stored in the mobile telephone unit (101) to select and receive a broadcast of another broadcast station (105) in the area corresponding to its own position. Thus, the mobile telephone unit (101) outputs a sound obtained from a broadcast the reception sensitivity of which is stronger, instead of the broadcast of the pre-selected broadcast station (104), thereby performing an alarm function.
