The method involves determining rate (R) and distortion (D) of encoding a part of digital signal of an image using encoding methods. Encoding cost (R+lambda D) of the methods are compared, where lambda is a preset coefficient. The method with low cost is selected for the part. A new coefficient value is determined for each new color component of the signal, based on the preset coefficient associated to one of previous color components. The digital signal has three color components, where one is luminance component and other two are chrominance components. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a communication apparatus including a device of encoding a digital signal of an image (B) an information storing unit readable by a computer or a microprocessor with instructions of a computer program, for implementing an encoding method (C) a computer program product including sequences of instructions for implementing an encoding method.
