An artificial intervertebral implant (1) including a first baseplate (10) having a top surface (20), a bottom surface (22), an aperture (30) extending therethrough and a strap (34) attached to the bottom surface (22) of the fir st baseplate (10) and underlying the aperture (30). The implant (1) further includes a second baseplate (12) juxtaposed with the first baseplate (10). T he second baseplate (12) includes a top surface (50) with a cavity (54) exposed therein. An articulating element (14) is attached to a pair of opposing sidewalls (58, 59) of the cavity (54) for retaining the strap (34) within th e cavity (54).
