PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new method for converting an aryl halide or a heteroaryl halide to an alkylthio compound. SOLUTION: The method for producing a compound represented by general formula (I): R<SP>1</SP>-S-Cy<SP>1</SP>(I) (wherein R<SP>1</SP>is a lower alkyl; and cy<SP>1</SP>is an aryl which may be substituted or a heteroaryl which may be substituted), a salt or the like thereof involves reacting a compound represented by general formula (II): X<SP>1</SP>-Cy<SP>1</SP>(II) (wherein X<SP>1</SP>is a halogen; and Cy<SP>1</SP>is the same as the above) or a salt thereof with one reagent selected from (1) an aralkylthiol-alkylating agent, (2) an acyl thioalkyl ester-base and (3) a dialkyl disulfide.
