<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a two-stage type inflator capable of changing expansion speed of an air bag according to severity of a collision, the size of an occupant and/or the position of the occupant. <P>SOLUTION: This inflator 10 has a dividing plate 40 for separating a gas generating substance 20 in a first chamber 22 from a gas generating substance 20 in a second chamber 33. Each of the gas generating substances 20 in the first and second chambers 22 and 33 is ignited by operating first and second igniters 11. The gas generating substance 20 in the second chamber 33 is prevented from being ignited by expansion gas from the first chamber 22 by the dividing plate 40. When internal pressure of the second chamber 33 exceeds internal pressure of the first chamber 22, the dividing plate 40 moves in an upper direction and expansion gas can be made to flow to the outside of the inflator 10 through the surrounding of the dividing plate 40 from the second chamber 33. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
